Looking for Innovative or Eco-Friendly Wrapping This Christmas?
If you’re searching for an innovative or eco-friendly way to wrap gifts this Christmas, why not try bojagi — a traditional Korean wrapping cloth — to give your presents an extra touch of meaning for your friends and loved ones?

Bojagi literally means “wrapping cloth” and is a traditional Korean folk textile art that dates back to the late 14th century, during the early Joseon Dynasty. Small pieces of fabric were stitched together to create a large, colorful square cloth, used to wrap gifts, food, items for religious ceremonies, and more.

Traditionally, there were two main types of Bojagi:

¤ Gungbo (궁보): Used in the royal court, commissioned by the palace and crafted by professional artisans.

¤ Minbo (민보): Used by commoners, usually handmade by women at home using silk, cotton, hemp, or any available fabric scraps.

Even today, bojagi is still used to wrap special gifts for family during major holidays such as Seollal (Lunar New Year) or Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). It is also appreciated as a beautiful work of art, often displayed in homes and Korean restaurants as decoration.

Modern bojagi artists combine traditional designs with contemporary art elements. It’s easy to incorporate bojagi into modern gift wrapping — whether for wine bottles or gourmet food and drink items, it’s a perfect way to add special meaning to your present. In fact, many people treasure the bojagi even more than the gift itself!

As a reusable wrapping material, bojagi is gaining recognition both in Korea and abroad for its eco-friendly value. Using a reusable bojagi cloth for holiday gifts is a small choice with a big environmental impact.
